Igloo

Point Architects from Tokyo combined a bed with a bookcase and the result was called the Uroko House. The incredible bookcase completely surrounds this bed, making it look like an igloo made of books.

Petek

"petek" means “honeycomb” in turkish. Honeycomb, known with it’s lightness and structural stability also gives it’s form to Petek. Stand-alone library based on the same principles with “Salkim” can hold many books. 6mm. Steel tubes bent into a geometric shape forms a strong constructions with it’s structural joints. Salkım Bookhanger

"salkım” means “bunch” or “cluster” (as in grapes) in turkish. With the idea of using less material on book storage, conventional hook form and function is applied on a new line of products. Making a library, much lighter than the books it holds, possible. Pieces hooked on each other complete the whole with colors, weight balance and juxtaposition of the books within. Being hooked at a single point give the impression of “lightness” to otherwise “heavy” books/bookshelves. Even a faint circulation of air in the displayed space moves the clusters giving them a motion that emphasize the “lightness”. 2006 Blickfang Vienna, MAK (modern/contemporary arts museum) MAK Designshop award winner

Nar

“nar” means “pomegranate” in turkish. Pomegranate is a fruit that holds hundreds of juicy seeds inside. It’s a fruit that symbolizes fertility. Nar coffetable carries books and books carry ideas. Ideas can be distructive as much as they can be constructive. Our aim was to emphasize the danger and the dilemma it holds with utter nakedness. Awarded as the Design of the Year in Istanbul Design Week 2005

Storyline

This fabulous bookshelf is proof that not all shelves need to be flat and straight. Amsterdam based design house Studio Frederik Roije brings these super cool anodised aluminum assymetrical Storyline Bookshelves that are a great twist to the traditional ones we are all used to. Inspired by the shapes of sound waves, these streamlined modern shelves are created in such a way that they resemble a scenic city skyline. Perfect for solving the problem of unequally sized books, the Storyline Shelf’s clean silhouette is functional, beautiful, and innovative. The shelves are available in six colors and two dimensions and add a great contemporary touch to any room.

Cat and Bird

What the artist has done is taken blocks of plastic or foam and cut out the shapes of cats looking at birds. Then, what is cut out is placed on top of the blocks. And then, to make the art functional, he sells it as bookshelves. Wouldn’t this be a cool bookshelf in an elementary school, or a little art deco for your hip apartment?

Spiral shelving

The bookcase is designed to hold books in a
sculptural yet functional way. It is composed of sections held together by keys. As these sections are put together the shelving is seen to continue in one flowing movement and the height of the piece can be determined by the amount of sections used.
The whole unit is constructed on a revolving base, so that the case can be rotated in either direction giving easy access to the books displayed. The books are held in position by spacers, which snap onto the inside edge of the shelving.

Stairs as bookshelves

Every design site on the Internet seems to have shown the stairs with drawers in them (on the left), we think originally published on Desire to Inspire in April and recently in Lifehacker. It is not a new idea, and has been used in boats for years. Some of the comments on various sites worry about what would happen if one left a drawer open and was carrying laundry down the stairs; they could be a hazard. Andy Thomson, designer of the miniHome, built a useful bookshelf system into the stairs to the loft, which is a less expensive method of using that usually wasted space, without the danger.

TWIN

The bookshelf is a cabinet when closed, when it is pulled to sides, the shelves representing the bridges become apparent. Via the selves with rails the TWIN becomes dynamic.TWIN bookshelf represent the two sides of Istanbul, Asian and European, and the bridges connecting them. It compares this connection with the relation of twins. Designed by Zeynep Cinisli.

Bookstairs

Addiction is a big problem for a lot of people. It starts at a vulnerable age with a copy of Tom’s Secret Garden recommended by a kindly librarian. You move on to Just William and The Ghost of Thomas Kempe and before long you are in real trouble, your whole adult life blighted. So if you are the sort of person who gets caught hiding hardbacks in your hair, taking them out for a quick furtive read at public events, or if you are constantly on the run from the paperazzi and people keep trying to make you go to rehab (or even a charity shop with a huge box of duplicates) this might just be a short-term answer: hide the books in the stairs. Honestly I am tempted to go through the hell that is building a loft extension just to be able to do this.

Eames ESU Bookcase

In 1949, Charles and Ray Eames developed a new system of free-standing multifunctional shelves which - similar to the Eames House that dates from the same time - were constructed strictly in keeping with the principles of industrial mass production: the Eames Storage Units (ESU). Moulded plywood sliding doors, brightly painted screens, brushed, galvanized metal surfaces, height-adjustable legs. Dimensions 120w x 43d x 148h.

Desk/shelving

When we go out and buy that big piece of furniture, we usually know exactly what it’s for. However, what if that piece of furniture could be reinterpreted differently by people. Take for instance this design by Yoon-Zee Kim. To one person it may simple be funky shelving. To another, it’s seating and a desk. Take a look around at your stuff. Do you see other uses for them?

Shelf bookcase

Design Naoto Fukasawa (2006). A basic shape with a strong, conceptual presence: the Shelf bookcase line grows with the addition of new models in different sizes offering greater flexibility and functionality. Unlike the last version, produced in a limited edition of 300 units, the new Shelf models will be produced in an unlimited series in white acrylic resin (natural acrylic stone LG). The proposal includes: two vertical models, a smaller square version and a horizontal model designed to be hung on the wall.

Sapien Bookcase - Short

For those with a lot of books and little space to store them, the Sapien Bookcase (2003) by Bruno Rainaldi provides a unique solution. By holding texts horizontally in a vertical stack, the Tall Sapien can accommodate up to 70 small and large books in a very compact footprint. (The shorter bookcase will hold up to 50 books.) The removable shelves are a mere 2mm thick but each one can hold approximately five books, or an impressive 20 lbs. The tall Sapien has 14 shelves, and the short Sapien has 10. When fully loaded, the bookcase virtually disappears behind the books. All-metal construction and a heavy, weighted base ensure the design's strength and stability. The durable lacquer finish is available in grey and white. Made in Italy.
