What's the next chapter for bookshelves?

So far, the move to e-readers hasn't had much impact on the home front, said interior designer Suzanne Goodwin, of Suzanne Goodwin & Associates in Minneapolis. "The trend is really young yet. I'm sure it's coming, but it will take a while for the majority of the public to catch up."

Homebuilders are still putting in bookshelves, and people are still accessorizing with books, said Marie Meko, a designer with Gabberts Design Studio. But clients are increasingly selective about what goes on the shelves, she said. "People want books that look nice, not just paperbacks. Not just rows of books, like in old libraries. We're not piling them on shelves."

Pisa

The left and right sides have 16 pieces in each side all cut at 89 degrees to create the sweeping curves. The simple shelf layout means that the bookcase has 3 different sizes spaces. This shelf layout can be changed if you wish.

Shelf-pod

Shelf-Pod is a private residence and study building, located in Moriguchi City, Japan. The client owns an extensive collection of books on the subject of Islamic history, so he requested that we create this building with the maximum capacity for its storage and exhibition.

In order to satisfy this demand effectively, we designed a lattice structure made from 25mm thick laminated pine-board which serve as book-shelves. The dimensions of each shelf are as follows: 360mm height, 300mm width and 300mm depth. All of the architectural elements in this space (stairs, windows, desks, chairs, etc) have been designed on the basis of this shelf scale, with the aim of achieving geometrical harmony which is comparable to Islamic Architecture. This innovative structural system affords not only large amount of book storage, but the possibility of flexible floor level which can be delivered from every height of bookshelf. Each space for different activity rise up helically, giving the impression of exploring a wooden jungle gym.

Catalyst

The beginning of any relationship requires the introduction of a catalyst. Strangers can be brought together through mutual interactions and occurrences. This type of interaction, whether done through a simple 'hello,' or a more elaborate activity, can be construed as a type of "play". My shelves aim to invite the user to interact with its form. They utilize various "play signals" that engage the user to touch, feel, and react to the object. Each shelf has the potential to stand alone, but the introduction of user participation can contribute to a full realization of it's features.

What's the next chapter for bookshelves?

Books have played a major role in shaping the American house. But with e-readers rapidly turning bookworms into techies, what's the future for home libraries, bookshelves and coffee-table tomes?

Pimp my Bookcart: I left my 'cart' in San Francisco

Made by student assistants (with a little help from their staff friends) in the Access Services Department of Gleeson Library/Geschke Center at The University of San Francisco, our cable car[t] represents some of the reasons why we love this city: lots of great books, baseball (our SF Giants just won the World Series!!), and a little song by Tony Bennett.

Pile Up

Books randomly piled up have unique beauty. The random beauty became a book end. Pile up your books and then it becomes a one of a kind book end.

The director bookcase

The Director bookcase is a representation of an antique. It is a physical line drawing of an old aesthetic. The bookcase is part of a pair. Put together they create a “cabinet”, but separated they still maintain a strong relationship.

Sunset

Bias of thoughts

Thoughts are biased. When ideas are passed from one person to another, due to the transfiguration of the communication process and the frame of mind of the receiver, they are always perceived with bias.

Inspired by the famous 2D drawing of the optical illusive bookshelf, a 3D structure is translated and the “Bias of Thought” bookshelf is formed. It can be used for shelving books and iPads as well as hanging magazines. Visually, the optical illusion serves as a reminder that, whenever one picks up a medium, ideas can be misinterpreted when passed from one end to the other.
