Spread 10Y magazine rack

Since the summer of 2011, for many months, spread (BTp-Bund 10Y) was the most used and worrying word in Italy. Newspapers and magazines all over the world have spoken daily about Italy and its debt: Too Big to Fail, Too Big to Save. Spread 10Y is a handcrafted wooden magazine rack designed to combine the "news" with the now "(in)famous" graph. It also maps the transition between the Silvio Berlusconi government and that of Mario Monti.

Book partition

More books are printed every year, read and discarded. Even though many are taken to charity shops, they mostly go unsold and the charities have to pay for the books to be sent to landfill. The Paperback Partition is made from this waste, creating an aesthetically pleasing and interesting divide in a room. It provides both good heat insulation, and acoustic insulation. Research showed that most people felt that books as objects were beautiful and they enjoyed their solidness, colour and texture, which the partition shows off.

Reading steps

A 19th century structure removed from context and re-imagined. A spiraling staircase – a fragment of a coil – standing in half shadow. It’s no longer a means to go somewhere, it has become the somewhere. Once held up by four walls, it is now re-mastered and self-supporting. Leavened by gravity and steel, heavy as the shadows. The oak and pine is pitted with a century and a half of daily rituals. It was discovered as a crumbling splinter of its former self. Careful, painstaking repairs have paved the way for its new function. A discrete yet bold intervention – a seat in place of steps, where dark cushions encourage you to pause. An old thoroughfare is now a place to stop, and read. In solitary contemplation, or intimate recital. The Reading Steps disorder the previous function, and create a new calm certainty. It’s about the beauty of a quiet disruption.James Plumb

Cemetery bookshelf: Jüdischer Friedhof Krems

The first public library in a Jewish cemetery. Designed as a memorial by Michael Clegg and Martin Guttman - the Jewish cemetery was virtually destroyed under the Third Reich - the artists created these bookcases in Krems in the size and shape of a grave stone with glass doors. It contains a carefully selected collection of books in German, English and Hebrew focusing on Jewish philosophy and the history of death.

Asteroid

An unrelated object falls from the top creating holes in the shelves before crushing on the floor. This produces a field in which one can insert a pot plant or a sculpture that can live with books.

INDRA bookcase

INDRA moves and grows much like the stories contained in the books it holds, weaving and tumbling along. Created in response to the strict formal language of traditional shelving and storage, INDRA enlivens space. Divorcing itself from the wall and corner—the final resting place for most bookshelves—INDRA becomes a part of the living environment. When used as a central piece in a room it serves a secondary function as a space divider, allowing its contents to be accessed from all sides.
