Comb bookcase and bench

The modular design allows you to use the single element as a bench for indoor and outdoor use, or a combination of various elements, changing it into a large bookcase. The design is characterized by a series of decorative and structural grooves which lighten the weight of each module.

Library chair for children

The project started with the thought, “Can a piece of furniture become a library?” In this project, the chair transforms into a bookcase and a library. The moment the user sits on the chair as they store the book that they were currently reading or sit on the pile of books, the surrounding is no longer a bedroom or a living room but transforms into a library.

Object-A chair bookcase

"I am looking in every nook and cranny of the room to find hidden spaces. Under the table, beneath the bed, above the wardrobe ... All the space in the room is completely full of odds and ends. There's no other choice. And I start building my objet like the city's tallest building seen from the window in the room."

Comfy Cargo Chair

The ‘Comfy Cargo Chair’ originated from the idea to create a piece of furniture which does not predetermine the surface for the user. The object is not finished, but rather requires creative collaboration by the owner. The chair’s form is reminiscent of a three dimensional grid. It consist simply of hollow spaces whose open structure requires filling with personal things such as books.

Book throne / Bücherthron

The series of three wooden pieces of furniture offers your favourite books an exceptional home. “Bücherthron” (books throne) and “Schmökerhocker” (browsing stool) additionally function as seating-accommodation, thus they make up a new type of furniture. While “Bücherthron” primarily provides space for pocket books and newspapers, your beloved coffee-table books will find room in “Schmökerhocker”, which provides those of us who prefer to sit and read on the carpet with a comfortable backrest. The natural habitat of “Nachtlektüretisch” is your sleeping room, where this bedside cabin will huddle against any edge of your bed. All pieces are made from European beech and have been treated with linseed oil.

Read Manchester BookBench exhibition

This summer, 58 book-shaped benches are on display across Manchester for you to enjoy (above, Elmer the Elephant by St Luke's CE Primary School, Longsight). The BookBenches have been designed by local children and community groups, who were inspired by books and reading. To celebrate the exhibition, there are lots of events taking place over the summer at the venues where the BookBenches are on display. You can also follow a trail between the BookBenches and children can complete fun activities along the way.  In partnership with Wild in Art, the BookBench project is part of the Read Manchester campaign from Manchester City Council and the National Literacy Trust. The campaign promotes reading across the city to boost literacy levels.

Bookchair

Drawing his inspiration from the relationship between architectural space and the human body, the Japanese architect styled a compact, essential bookcase from which you can extract a chair. A veritable object within the object, which underscores the relationship between people and books: after choosing a book, the reader can take the chair and sit down to read it. Bookchair is available in one colour only – white – in order to underline the abstractness of the product and the strong ties between the content and the container, between the container and the user.

Reading hideaway

A children’s unit for public libraries, schools and children’s centres across the UK. Children can take a book from the display on each end of the unit and then curl up inside and read it. All of our designs come from a reader-centred approach ie: trying to improve the display of books for the reader, so that they can’t help but reach out and grab a book. All of products are designed to be able to display books ‘face-out’ rather than spine-out so that the jackets can be seen.
