Libro is a free staircase; a cross between shelving and footstool. Simply placed on the ground like a piece of furniture, away from the wall and on the threshold to the next floor, Libro will take you by surprise. Made of steel and bamboo, the straight or quarter turn Libro staircase is very stable and hardwearing. An elegant handrail can also be added, should you wish.

Alternate tread stair bookcase
"Two custom designed loft beds carefully integrated into the bedrooms of an apartment in a converted industrial building. The alternate tread stair was designed to be a perfect union of functionality, structure and form. With regard to functionality, the stair is comfortable, safe to climb, and spatially efficient."

Band Rail bookcase
Band-Rail ripples effortlessly through space while holding considerable book weight. Storage space is integrated to the staircase and generates an elegant and vibrant environment. Made of wooden ‘gills’ and supported by a minimal steel beam the handrail is mechanically fastened and brought to site in a few pre-assembled pieces that fit inside a standard car.

Reading steps
A 19th century structure removed from context and re-imagined. A spiraling staircase – a fragment of a coil – standing in half shadow. It’s no longer a means to go somewhere, it has become the somewhere. Once held up by four walls, it is now re-mastered and self-supporting. Leavened by gravity and steel, heavy as the shadows. The oak and pine is pitted with a century and a half of daily rituals. It was discovered as a crumbling splinter of its former self. Careful, painstaking repairs have paved the way for its new function. A discrete yet bold intervention – a seat in place of steps, where dark cushions encourage you to pause. An old thoroughfare is now a place to stop, and read. In solitary contemplation, or intimate recital. The Reading Steps disorder the previous function, and create a new calm certainty. It’s about the beauty of a quiet disruption.James Plumb

Stair bookcase
For a private house in Muswell Hill, London.
"We were asked to convert the loft of a private house into a bedroom with a study, which was to include a large bookcase, whilst still keeping to a very tight budget. As the conversion required the creation of a new staircase to the loft, we designed a combined solution that incorporated the staircase and bookcase into a single element."

.stairCASE

The initial keywords: space, storage, future. In the future space becomes more desireable, because the big appartment buildings are taking over the normal 1, 2 or 3 level houses. It's more efficient because you will need less square meters to house people. therefore the focus for the future is on height and not in width. But current storage furniture is designed for average humans with a length of approx. 1.8 meters so everything is reachable. So to be efficient also our furniture needs to grow in height in stead of width. This StairCASE is the result of these facts.

Alternating-tread stairs
Here’s an interesting set of alternating-tread stairs, the likes of which I’ve never seen before. They’re in a house renovated by Adam Jirkal, Jerry Kozaa and Tomáš Kalhous, located in Všenory, Czech Republic.

Bookstairs
Addiction is a big problem for a lot of people. It starts at a vulnerable age with a copy of Tom’s Secret Garden recommended by a kindly librarian. You move on to Just William and The Ghost of Thomas Kempe and before long you are in real trouble, your whole adult life blighted. So if you are the sort of person who gets caught hiding hardbacks in your hair, taking them out for a quick furtive read at public events, or if you are constantly on the run from the paperazzi and people keep trying to make you go to rehab (or even a charity shop with a huge box of duplicates) this might just be a short-term answer: hide the books in the stairs. Honestly I am tempted to go through the hell that is building a loft extension just to be able to do this.
