Malus communis
Beyond the object, malus communis is a poetic place, a haven of peace. Since Eve offered Adam the forbidden fruit, the apple - fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil - has always been associated with temptation. Malus Communis symbolizes this temptation through the various media of knowledge and culture of our time such as the books, cd’s and dvd’s it contains. Nowadays, the shelf has become an object, even an essential tool to store one’s knowledge and culture. Malus Communis calls to meditation, under the tree, where you can directly consume the culture you’ve just picked.

Lineweight
The 3 lines are made of plexiglass and represent 3 painted lines which become shelves as they come down. The lines also act as a dry-erase surface to write and draw things. Paint rollers are stored at the bottom, serving as erasers. In between the shelves, there are drawers that can hold different things depending on the size, ranging from letter size paper, to markers, to CDs etc.

Will the home library survive the surge of the e-book?
"I've not actually read any of them. I just love the bindings." So said the actress Davinia Taylor earlier this year when she decided to put her house on the market – complete with its carefully-sourced collection of classic books. Rarely removed from their perch on a bookcase in the living room, their primary purpose was to disguise Taylor's walk-in fridge. And so, with the fridge no longer destined to be a feature in her life, the books were deemed redundant.

Skateboard bookshelves
Skateboards are full of energy - they're dynamic, their riders are always ollieing and railing and flipping - and the bookshelf should try to capture that movement.

Long form library
This is a remarkable piece of furniture. The concept was to design an environment in which to read and contemplate. Just as crucial was the notion that the piece be incredibly modern in its aesthetic. Ron Arad, a designer you may be familiar with, often incorporates movement in his work. The library takes inspiration from this. Rather like the hull of a boat, the underside is curved, allowing steady gentle rocking, controlled by the occupant, as you would on a tree swing or an old rocking chair. It can hold up to 400 books of varying shapes and sizes, and/or several hundred CD's, DVD's, or indeed nothing at all, it is entirely up to you.

Will tablets force bookcases to go the way of the TV armoire?
Will it disappear the same way the flat-screen killed off the TV armoire and Netflix killed off the DVD rack? Will the bookcase as a display of the well-read go the way of the photo album – replaced by the digital picture frame?
