M System

This system enables several compositions. The stability is given by the angle of the snap against the gravitational pull. It was designed to be completely cut into a single FSC plywood panel, for maximum use of the material. The assemblage is all done through the joints. No need for nails, screws, glue.

Book box

The book box has built in book stands which allows you to place different sized books randomly in the box without them falling over. The boxes can be stacked on top of each other or hung on the wall. You can flip the boxes and use it on the side, the legs then become additional shelves. Made entirely out of wood waste from factories in Denmark, with no screws, bolts or anything else.

Public bookcase

A Bookcase, set in a public setting (sort of a park in this case) accessible at all time for all. No rules. A person may choose a book, take it home to read and bring it back... or keep it... or exchange it for one of their own books.

The first Public Bookcase was presented 2003.

All of them are organised and taken care for by a citizen initiative - Bürgerstiftung Bonn. Expenses are mostly met with the help of donations and volunteers.

Since October 2005 there is a second one at the Rhine riverside.
2006 - a small pavilion is turned into an open book stop following the same concept.
November 2008 - a third Open Bookcase
Just a week later - a fourth Open Bookcase
11. September 2009 - the newest (fifth!) Open Bookcase
Location: Bonn, Germany

Book bike

Everyone has the right to build and cherish a private library.

With this in mind, we present The Book Bike: a custom-built tricycle stocked with 200 lbs of free books. Since July of 2008, The Book Bike has been responsible for placing over 3,000 new and used books into peoples’ hands. In spring and summer, you’ll find The Book Bike at Chicago public parks on the weekends; anyone who wants a book is invited to take something home to read.

Book Bike 2.0

In the summer of 2010, The Book Bike puts a spotlight on independent publishers: from hand-crafted zines to literary magazines and books, The Book Bike is a unique resource of the global independent literary scene.

With your help, all books on The Book Bike will be purchased from independent bookstores and indie press. Not only will the books continue to be given away from The Book Bike for anyone and everyone to enjoy, but every book and will have been paid for, thus directly supporting independent booksellers while keeping with the mission of free books for all.

James Thurber interview

INTERVIEWER
You say that your drawings often don’t come out the way you intended?

THURBER
Well, once I did a drawing for The New Yorker of a naked woman on all fours up on top of a bookcase—a big bookcase. She’s up there near the ceiling, and in the room are her husband and two other women. The husband is saying to one of the women, obviously a guest, “This is the present Mrs. Harris. That’s my first wife up there.” Well, when I did the cartoon originally I meant the naked woman to be at the top of a flight of stairs, but I lost the sense of perspective and instead of getting in the stairs when I drew my line down, there she was stuck up there, naked, on a bookcase.
Incidentally, that cartoon really threw The New Yorker editor, Harold Ross. He approached any humorous piece of writing, or more particularly a drawing, not only grimly but realistically. He called me on the phone and asked if the woman up on the bookcase was supposed to be alive, stuffed, or dead. I said, “I don’t know, but I’ll let you know in a couple of hours.” After a while I called him back and told him I’d just talked to my taxidermist, who said you can’t stuff a woman, that my doctor had told me a dead woman couldn’t support herself on all fours. “So, Ross,” I said, “she must be alive.” “Well then,” he said, “what’s she doing up there naked in the home of her husband’s second wife?” I told him he had me there.

Ark

Situated by the V&A’s National Art Library, this freestanding wooden tower re-evaluates the concept of the ‘archive’. Its walls are made up of hundreds of shelves, holding thousands of second-hand books. Accessed via a spiral staircase, each floor includes a secluded reading chamber. Positioned to face inwards, the book spines form an exterior façade of monotonous white, whereas the interior view consists of a rich collage of colours and typographic textures.

Take a seat

Take a seat from darris hamroun on Vimeo.

Backgammon bookshelf

When the board is closed it appears to be a set of two large books that could be placed on a typical bookshelf. On the spine of the first "book" an imprint in gold letters is Evenings At Home Vol. 1. The second spine had almost the same imprint - Evenings At Home Vol. 2. When the "books" are open they reveal a standard backgammon board of 42.7cm long x 48cm wide x 3.5cm thick.
