Bias of thoughts

Thoughts are biased. When ideas are passed from one person to another, due to the transfiguration of the communication process and the frame of mind of the receiver, they are always perceived with bias.

Inspired by the famous 2D drawing of the optical illusive bookshelf, a 3D structure is translated and the “Bias of Thought” bookshelf is formed. It can be used for shelving books and iPads as well as hanging magazines. Visually, the optical illusion serves as a reminder that, whenever one picks up a medium, ideas can be misinterpreted when passed from one end to the other.

Luoto

Luoto is a family of space elements, experimenting on the shift and communication between interior and exterior, social and intimate, center and perifery, dynamics and stillness. It occupies a small corner of the world, creating room for everyday situations. The idea of Luoto is to offer a place to rest and imagine, taking your own time and space.

The idea of Luoto is based on the concept of the growing box: an object that cannot be identified as a specific typology: the initial container becomes a mobile table, and evolves into a multifunctional structure able to host differents activities (study, introspection, relax) on two levels, and allows, by revolving itself, to be open or closed to the sorroundings. Its mobility and vertical shape make it an object which allows to utilize and enjoy totally the domestic environment. The outer metallic shell is a protection that contains a wooden warm soul.

Hjørring Central Library

The heart and pivotal point of the new library is a physical communication structure that twists and winds its way through the library. Sometimes a coun-ter, sometimes a table, sometimes a section of shelves, the structure points, guides and tempts the visitors to explore the library area. The band works as a decoration and an active communication tool for the library staff.

Reading hideaway

A children’s unit for public libraries, schools and children’s centres across the UK. Children can take a book from the display on each end of the unit and then curl up inside and read it. All of our designs come from a reader-centred approach ie: trying to improve the display of books for the reader, so that they can’t help but reach out and grab a book. All of products are designed to be able to display books ‘face-out’ rather than spine-out so that the jackets can be seen.

Book chair

"I took the lines from a Morris chair that I have and used recycled steel to weld together the frame. That took about three hours. The tricky part was drilling the books so they'd fit on the frame. It's hard to do without causing an incredible mess and winding up with a pile of confetti. I used a friend's drill press, and it took at least 20 hours. The whole thing cost about $11 in materials. It's the investment of time that's significant. I had to resist the temptation to read any of the books, because that cut into my drilling time."
The books are trade paperbacks donated to a local library for one of its regular fund-raising sales.
