Kub+

KUB+ is a project that aims to bring functionality to living rooms with limited space, serving as a ludic and customizable furniture, allowing users to interact with the colored mobile pieces in addition to following the trend of assembling do-it-yourself and taking inspiration from famous toy Rubik's Cube. The project uses no glue and the pieces are put together through wood dowel pins. The material used are sheets of plywood and the finish is made with lacquer ink.

Italia

materiali: legno laccato, gomma, ferro arrugginito.

Basement stacks

Books breaking through the (faux) wall downstairs, referencing the "basement stacks" every library has. In this case it's as if those stacks had been sealed up during some remodel, and are anthropomorphically breaking through, referencing the old library, history, roots, poltergeists... Created for the VIA Advertising Agency, which recently renovated and moved their offices into the old Baxter building, which served as Portland's public library from 1888 until the 1960s.

Print Books: Should They Stay or Should They Go?

As I packed for the move, I questioned whether it made financial sense to ship my several hundred books across the country, and more important, if I went through the trouble of doing this, what was the point when they would only sit untouched in a different city, just as they have for so many years in New York?

Twisted tales

A Shakespearean reference of the old library's books "shuffling off this mortal coil". The books, some of which were actually once in the library's stacks, were gathered from local bookshops, then twisted and trimmed to fit flush against the paneled wall. There are whimsical, nostalgic Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Harry Potter-esque references also, since it looks magical, and it's under the stairs. Created for the VIA Advertising Agency, which recently renovated and moved their offices into the old Baxter building, which served as Portland's public library from 1888 until the 1960s.

Really useful bookcase

"Leading product designer Ken Grange points at a bookcase. 'I designed this in the shape of a man,' he says. 'When I die, all my wife has to do is chuck out the books and put me in instead. That's real design for recycling."

Is a Bookless Library Still a Library?

We've been hearing about it for years, but the bookless library has finally arrived, making a beachhead on college campuses. At Drexel University's new Library Learning Terrace, which opened just last month, there is nary a bound volume, just rows of computers and plenty of seating offering access to the Philadelphia university's 170 million electronic items. Scott Erdy, designer of the new library, says open, flexible space — the furniture is movable and the walls act as one giant whiteboard — allows student and staff "knowledge transfer," a concept reinforced by Danuta Nitecki, dean of Drexel's libraries. "We don't just house books, we house learning," she says.

Malus communis

Beyond the object, malus communis is a poetic place, a haven of peace. Since Eve offered Adam the forbidden fruit, the apple - fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil - has always been associated with temptation. Malus Communis symbolizes this temptation through the various media of knowledge and culture of our time such as the books, cd’s and dvd’s it contains. Nowadays, the shelf has become an object, even an essential tool to store one’s knowledge and culture. Malus Communis calls to meditation, under the tree, where you can directly consume the culture you’ve just picked.

Lineweight

The 3 lines are made of plexiglass and represent 3 painted lines which become shelves as they come down. The lines also act as a dry-erase surface to write and draw things. Paint rollers are stored at the bottom, serving as erasers. In between the shelves, there are drawers that can hold different things depending on the size, ranging from letter size paper, to markers, to CDs etc.

Will the home library survive the surge of the e-book?

"I've not actually read any of them. I just love the bindings." So said the actress Davinia Taylor earlier this year when she decided to put her house on the market – complete with its carefully-sourced collection of classic books. Rarely removed from their perch on a bookcase in the living room, their primary purpose was to disguise Taylor's walk-in fridge. And so, with the fridge no longer destined to be a feature in her life, the books were deemed redundant.

Long form library

This is a remarkable piece of furniture. The concept was to design an environment in which to read and contemplate. Just as crucial was the notion that the piece be incredibly modern in its aesthetic. Ron Arad, a designer you may be familiar with, often incorporates movement in his work. The library takes inspiration from this. Rather like the hull of a boat, the underside is curved, allowing steady gentle rocking, controlled by the occupant, as you would on a tree swing or an old rocking chair. It can hold up to 400 books of varying shapes and sizes, and/or several hundred CD's, DVD's, or indeed nothing at all, it is entirely up to you.

Will tablets force bookcases to go the way of the TV armoire?

Will it disappear the same way the flat-screen killed off the TV armoire and Netflix killed off the DVD rack? Will the bookcase as a display of the well-read go the way of the photo album – replaced by the digital picture frame?
